Last week all prisons in Belgium observed one minute of silence for the victims of the Islamic terror attack in Belgium, which left four victims dead. Inmates of the prison in Mechelen deliberately interrupted the minute of silence by banging on the walls and doors. Early reports indicated that they were chanting “Allahu Akbar”, but that is now being denied.
A large part of the prison population in Belgium (well, everywhere really) is Muslim. Last year, Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) requested and received numbers from the Belgian government: 44% of all prisoners in Belgium do not have the Belgian nationality (this number does not include inmates with double nationality). Moroccans (9.7%) are the largest group of foreign inmates in Belgium, followed by Algerians (5.3%) and Rumanians (3.3%). One third of all inmates are illegals.
