Brussels: Police and local government struggling to keep employees safe from illegals

The local government in Brussels is advising government employees to avoid the Maximiliaanpark, following a surge in crimes and harassment in the area. The park is a congregation place for hundreds of illegal immigrants. Several months ago, officers from the nearby police station were ambushed after duty and seriously injured in an attack. The police department already raised the alarm, stating: “If we can’t even feel safe in our own station, where does it end?”

Last month, a police officer was stabbed in the de facto slums of Brussels that the park has become.

After the police, now government employees cannot be kept safe either. So far, there is no indication that the Belgian immigration policy is set to be changed, suggesting that while police and government are taking desperate steps to keep their employees somewhat safe, ordinary people who live or work in that area – or other areas where illegals will start setting up their tents in the future – will have to fend for themselves.
