Destroying the norm: traditional family now a ‘political statement’ in Australia

The left’s never-ending fight to destroy the norm must be nearing its peak: the traditional family of mother, father and kid is now deemed a political statement by TV company Free TV Australia which is refusing to air a Father’s Day commercial from a non profit organization called Dads4Kids. Australia’s post-modernists are politicizing everything imaginable in light of the country’s vote on same sex marriage, which is taking place in a postal vote during this month.

I’m from The Netherlands. Same sex marriage is so accepted here it’s not even a serious political issue anymore. I support the gay community and equal rights, but things like this illustrate the extremism that has become an inherent part of progressivism in recent years.  As I mentioned before: racing to their own “peak political correctness”, the left are actually in a race to the bottom when it comes to the number of people who can still identify with and approve of their message.

The left’s focus on minorities has led them to reject the norm to a degree that any reference to the norm (in whichever area), or any belonging to the norm is becoming an offense against their ideology and the victim groups they claim to represent. It’s not bringing people to their side, and it’s limiting freedom instead of promoting it.

That is precisely why these efforts will prove counterproductive. You can fight for the emancipation of whichever group you like, but attacking normal people while doing so will turn many of them against you. I’m sorry if the word “normal” offends you, but there is no judgement in that word. “Normal” means “pertaining to the norm”, and the norm is “something that is usual, typical, or standard”. A large majority is always the norm, is always what is considered normal. It doesn’t mean they are better or worse than the others. In politicizing the norm, the left has opened the door for the defenders of traditional marriage to do the same. Some responses in Australian media:

“If you don’t like being bullied by activists, vote no,”

“If you don’t like political correctness, vote no, because it’s the best way you have to stop it in its tracks.”

“It is extraordinary that this is where we have come to as a country; we can no longer celebrate Father’s Day without being forced to look at it through the lens of the same-sex marriage debate. It’s a tragedy that a political motive is now implied in any mention of fatherhood … Not everything is about same-sex marriage.”

“I think it’s a pretty concerning glimpse into the future where apparently promoting fatherhood is now a political act.”

~ The Australian, No Dad joke: Father’s Day now too ‘political’

Fighting for equal rights is fine. Laudable even. But the left can’t seem to do it without attempting to destroy the norm. And that’s where progressivism turns into cultural marxism. It’s tempting to blindly oppose what they promote, because it’s clear they will never be done demanding more. They will never be done until the norms upon which our great civilization is founded are all gone.
