Merkel’s Germany has finally deported an immigrant. To be precise: Adil Yigit, a journalist who has lived in Germany for 36 years without problem, and who protested Turkey’s treatment of journalists during Merkel’s joint press conference with Erdogan.
This is our political class in a nutshell: tough talk about human rights and freedom of the press, tough talk about autocrats like Erdogan. But none of it matters when push comes to shove. Yigit is convinced the order he received to leave the country comes in response to the unrest at the press conference. So are we all, Adil. Our leaders have no principles and no backbone. They care about power and they don’t care what stands in their way. In this case, somehow, it was you.
